COUGARS DEFEAT MUSTANGS IN FIRST ROUND PLAYOFF MATCHUP

Gilroy, CA - The Christopher High School Varsity Boys Basketball team won their first ever CCS Playoff game on Tuesday night in front of a packed house at Christopher High School's Gymnasium. The community support was tremendous for both teams in this crosstown rivalry turned playoff match-up that certainly lived up to all the expectations that come with a crosstown rivalry, with a touch more intensity due to the single-elimination CCS playoff scenario. The Cougars prevailed 85 to 63 to claim the victory and advance to the CCS Division III Playoff Second Round vs. the Monterey Torreadores at Monterey High School on Thursday night at 7:00pm. Offensively, the Cougars used good ball movement to present a variety of scoring scenarios against the Mustangs defense. The Mustangs were tenacious in the final minutes of the 1st Half, however, closing a one time 20 point lead to just 10 points and forcing the Cougars out of their offensive attack for a brief period. The Cougars outscored the Mustangs 44 to 32 in the 2nd Half and closed the game on a 38 to 22 run to account for the final difference. The Cougars received a team high 25 points from Junior Center Shane Suttles, 18 points from Senior Guard Andrew Foster, 16 points from Senior Guard Wyatt Rocheleau, 16 points from Junior Guard Evan Shapiro, and 8 points from Sophomore Forward Dillon Day.

I will go to battle with our players anytime. They never give up and they never retreat. Our current record may not be indicative of the effort our players are giving each and every game, but we are trying to focus on the positive because we have competed in every game."

Coaching Bio

Coach Rodriguez coached basketball as an assistant coach for the Gavilan College Girls Baskeball team for two years from 1999-2001. He competed in Express Basketball Leagues for over seven years. Express teams are a mix of college level baskeball athletes who play against College Universities, and Jr College programs to get them ready for their seasons. Coach Rodriguez believes that players get out what they put in.
